Shadow or Substance

  • Reverend R. T.

We are living in a world of denial, where people refuse to see, admit, or accept the most obvious truths. Things are different from what most people think or believe. Long ago Aesop wrote, "Do not mistake the shadow for the substance."

Throughout the ages, in all different cultures and societies, people have realized that things are simply not as they appear to be. They have sought to understand, perceive, or determine what lies beneath surface appearance. Long ago, Phaedrus declared, "Things are not always what they seem." Plato wrote of people living in a cave who have no idea of the greater reality, the difference between substance and shadow, reality and illusions. Henri Bergson observed, "The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend." Are these just social outcasts or misfits? Or are they truly the wise ones, those who know there is a Greater Reality?

Clearly, we live in a world of problems. And, a problem is, by definition, something which is not as it appears to be. Something is entirely different from what you think, believe, understand, or perceive. This world is built upon layer upon layer of illusions, untruths, lies, and deception. Many thousands of years ago, Hindus called it "maya," meaning "that which is not." We may have a more sophisticated language to describe this virtual world we live in, today, but the underlying principle remains the same.

This view is found in so many, many forms, in cultures worldwide, throughout time, that it should not be lightly dismissed

"All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream." — Edgar Allan Poe

"Everyone takes the limits of his own vision for the limits of the world." — Arthur Schopenhauer

"All that this world contains are but images and flourishes of fiction. Ill-advised is he who does not comprehend his place in the number of these images." — Omar Khayyam

"It is a good viewpoint to see the world as a dream. When you have something like a nightmare, you will wake up and tell yourself that it was only a dream. It is said that the world we live in is not a bit different from this." — Hagakure

"Maybe this world is another planet's Hell." — Aldous Huxley

"Life is but a dream, a grotesque and foolish dream." — Mark Twain

"Life is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." — William Shakespeare

"All life is a struggle in the dark." — Lucretius

"As for all those torments that are said to take place in the depths of Hell; they are actually present here and now, in our own lives." — Lucretius

"The world is all a carcass, smoke and vanity,
The shadow of a shadow, a play,
And in one word, just Nothing." — Owen Felltham

"If this is the best of all possible worlds, what are the others like?" — Voltaire

"Life is an unbroken succession of false situations." — Thornton Wilder

"What we imagine is order is merely the prevailing form of chaos." — Kerry Thornley

The nature of physical "reality" can only be understood by going beyond physical explanations: there is a metaphysical(or spiritual) cause for everything that exists or happens in this universe.

The world is built upon forces, energies, and phenomena that are non-physical. As physicist Werner Heisenberg noted, "Some physicists would prefer ... the idea of an objective real world .... This however is impossible." A few quantum mechanics theorists believe that the underlying field of universal energy is consciousness or "mind." This is true.

As Arthur Schopenhauer realized, "This very real world of ours, with all its suns and galaxies, is — nothing."

The fact that the sun is shining brightly does not mean this is a world filled with Light — it is all smoke and mirrors

The powers-that-be are committed to the total control of mankind, ensuring the oppression of the human spirit — and sustaining Evil. They are themselves creatures of darkness, and the Light and Truth are something they simply cannot tolerate. So, they do everything they can to destroy our connection with the Truth and Light. If they are not perpetuating our suffering, our ignorance, our problems, then what are they doing? They certainly aren't solving them. They exist to keep us from God and Christ.

In other words, they are here to block the Light, the saving grace of God.

This is a world of illusions. And, most people would rather dream a better dream or live in a better illusion. So, illusion is preferable to Reality, lies are better than Truth, wrong seems right, and evil ... well, evil is good to them. Think about that.

A Course In Miracles, a New Age teaching falsely attributed to Jesus Christ, declares that everyone is perfect, everyone is good, everyone is "God," and life is perfect in this world. The only problem is that we just can't see it that way. And, we need to get over the error of our perception: there is no evil, only perfect good. Is that your experience of life? Is that the experience of the billions of people who go to bed hungry every night, who live tortured, brutal lives of desperation and suffering? Is the only problem with Evil the fact that we are not able to see it as good? Does evil not in fact destroy so many lives, and cause unspeakable suffering for mankind?

Jesus had no illusions that this world was perfect or good, or that everyone in it was that way. He came to separate the darkness from the Light, Truth from lies, Good from evil, the Real from the illusions, and God's children of Light from Satan's demonic spawn.

It's happening now. Praise God.
